Building Awareness & Enhancing Our Response to Sexual Abuse of Older Adults
Building Awareness & Enhancing Our Response to Sexual Abuse of Older Adults
Raeann Rideout, MA, Central East Regional Elder Abuse Consultant, Elder Abuse Ontario (EAO)
Older adult victims often experience serious long-term impacts following sexual violence. The issue, often not disclosed to or identified by health-care professionals can be a very difficult subject to broach with older adults. In order that needs of older adult victims be met, it is important for health-care professionals to understand the dynamics of sexual abuse and how best to respond.
This webinar will provide an overview of the complexities and many aspects related to sexual abuse: emotional and physical impacts, the factors associated with aging that increase vulnerability, the warning signs and barriers to disclosure and accessing the justice system.
By reviewing case studies, participants will learn strategies to start the conversations about suspected sexual abuse, safety planning issues and the requirements pertaining to reporting.
Elder Abuse Ontario’s Sexual Abuse in Older Adults training module will be used to demonstrate how to conduct an assessment, to detect, intervene and support older adult survivors of sexual abuse.
